Lyngbya majuscula is a species of filamentous cyanobacteria in the genus Lyngbya. As a result of recent genetic analyses, several new genera was erected from the genus Lygnbya: e.g., Moorea, Limnoraphis, Okeania, Microseira, and Dapis. Almost 300 different secondary metabolites have been isolated from specimens identified as L. majuscula.

Causes of Lyngbya blooms. Several environmental factors lead to rapid growth or blooms of Lyngbya. Lyngbya majuscula by Clinton Dawes (Martin and Martin 1987, Johnson and Martin 1988). Speziale (1990) identified samples from the same source as L. wollei. Speziale and Dyck (1992) preferred to assign the species name wollei to indicate separation in having the name reflect the source (freshwater versus marine). Direct To gauge the natural product potential of Lyngbya and gain insights into potential microbial interactions, we sequenced the genome of Lyngbya majuscula 3L, a Caribbean strain that produces the tubulin polymerization inhibitor curacin A and the molluscicide barbamide, using a combination of Sanger and 454 sequencing approaches. Curacin A (1) is a potent cancer cell toxin obtained from strains of the tropical marine cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula found in Curaçao.
